TWIL #055 - The Bombardier Beetle Fires a Boiling Chemical Spray 500 Times per Second

The bombardier beetle stores two chemicals in separate body chambers and mixes them on demand to produce an explosive, 100°C spray - pulsed at up to 500 bursts per second.

Bombardier beetle (Brachinus sp.)

The bombardier beetle (primarily from tribes Brachinini and Paussini within the family Carabidae) has one of the most sophisticated chemical defence systems in the animal kingdom.

The chemistry: The beetle stores two separate chemicals in two adjacent glands in its abdomen:

  • Hydroquinone (a phenol compound)
  • Hydrogen peroxide

These are kept completely separate during rest. When threatened, the beetle contracts muscles that force both compounds into a reinforced reaction chamber, where they mix with two enzymes: catalase and peroxidase.

The result is a rapid, highly exothermic oxidation reaction. Hydroquinone is oxidised to benzoquinone, hydrogen peroxide decomposes to water and oxygen, and the reaction releases enough heat to bring the mixture to approximately 100°C - the boiling point of water. The oxygen generated creates pressure that ejects the mixture as a scalding, toxic spray.

The pulse: The spray is not continuous. High-speed photography (research by MIT and Cambridge, published in 2015 in Science) showed the spray is pulsed at 500–1,000 bursts per second. The mechanism is a valve between the storage glands and reaction chamber. Each reaction cycle builds pressure that forces the valve shut, briefly stopping the flow, then the pressure drops enough for the valve to open again. This repeats rapidly.

Pulsed sprays are significantly more effective than a continuous stream of the same volume: each pulse creates a pressure wave and a fresh burst of hot vapour, delivering more mechanical and thermal damage per unit of chemical.

Aim: The tip of the abdomen is highly manoeuvrable. The beetle can aim the spray forward, sideways, or directly backward - and has been filmed firing precisely at an ant biting its leg.

Tolerance: The beetle itself is unharmed. The reaction chamber wall is lined with a specialised cuticle resistant to benzoquinone and heat, and the reaction is contained within the chamber rather than occurring inside the storage glands.
